The West Midlands was once an entrepreneurial superpower, known widely as the ‘Workshop of the World’. But in the post-war period manufacturing declined, output dropped, factories began to close, and unemployment soared. Now the region is finding its feet again after receiving new powers and responsibilities from Westminster. Andy’s speech tells this story through his own experiences, from growing up in Birmingham to eventually becoming the region’s first elected Mayor.
